Short bio: Born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1956. He received the Electrotechnical Engineering Diploma from the University of Oporto, Oporto, Portugal, in 1978 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL), Lisbon, Portugal, in 1985 and 1992, respectively. Since 1978, he has been a Member of the Teaching and Research Staff with the Instituto Superior Técnico, UTL, where he is currently a Full Professor of instrumentation and measurement. Since 1994, he has been with the Instituto de Telecomunicações, UTL, where he is currently a Member of the Instrumentation and Measurement research line. His current research interests include electrical measurements, ADC modeling, testing and standardization, and automatic measurement systems.

Artur Lopes Ribeiro

Short bio: Born in Lisbon, on April 8, 1950. He received the degree in electrical engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon (UTL), Lisbon, Portugal, in 1973, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from IST/UTL in 1990. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, IST/UTL, in 1977, where he has been a member of the faculty. He joined the Instituto de Telecomunicações in 1991. His current research interests include the instrumentation and electric measurement and numerical modeling of electric and optoelectronic components.

Fernando Tim Tim Janeiro

Short bio: Born in Almada, Portugal, in 1974, received the Diploma and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon (UTL), Lisbon, Portugal, in 1997 and 2004, respectively. Since 2001, he has been a member of the Teaching and Research Staff of Universidade de Évora, Portugal, where he is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Physics. Since 1997, he has been with Instituto de Telecomunicações, where he is currently a member of the Instrumentation and Measurement Research Line. His current research interests include impedance measurements, sine-fitting algorithms, power-quality measurements and environmental measurement systems.

Helena Ramos

José Dias Pereira

Short bio: Born in Portugal in 1959. He received is degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) in 1982. During almost eight years he worked for Portugal Telecom in digital switching and transmission systems. In 1992, he returned to teaching as Assistant Professor in Escola Superior de Tecnologia of Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, where he is, at present, a Principal Coordinator Professor. In 1995 he received the MSc degree and in 1999 the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from IST. His main research interests are included in the Instrumentation and Measurements areas.

Nuno Gonçalo Bandeira Brás

Short bio: Born on May 18, 1977, in Lisbon, Portugal. He graduated in physics engineering from the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2000, and worked for information technology (IT) consulting companies during four years before taking the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering. He is currently a Researcher in basic sciences and enabling technologies area (namely, in electronics, instrumentation and measurement) with the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) and the IST, Technical University of Lisbon. His work is related to new imaging reconstruction methods and instrumentation solutions for tomographical imaging. In 2007, he was a Laboratory Professor with IST. He co-founded LMIT Lda, in 2007. During 2011, he was an Invited Professor with Evora State University.

Octavian Postolache

Short bio: Born in Piatra Neamt, Romania, on July 29, 1967. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from “Gh. Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Iasi, Romania, in 1999. In 1992, he joined the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electrical Measurements and Electrical Materials, Technical University of Iasi, where he worked for nine years as a Lecturer and an Assistant Professor. In 2000, he became a Ph.D. Researcher with the Instituto Superior Técnico and In- stituto de Telecomunicações, Technical University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, where he has been involved in different projects in the area of instrumentation. His research interests include smart sensors for environmental and biomedical applications, sensor and algorithm implementation for nondestructive testing, distributed instrumentation, sensor networks, and computational intelligence implementation in automated measurement systems.

Pedro Silva Girão

Short bio: Born in Lisbon, Portugal, on February 27, 1952. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL), Lisbon, in 1988. In 1975, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), UTL, first as a Lecturer and currently as a Full Professor. In 1997, he joined the Instituto de Telecomunicações, where he is currently a Senior Researcher, the Head of the Instumentation and Measurements Group, and the Coordinator of the Basic Sciences and Enabling Technologies. His main research interests include instrumentation, transducers, measurement techniques, and digital data processing, particularly for biomedical, environmental, chemical, and civil applications. Metrology, quality, and electromagnetic compatibility are also his areas of regular activity, for which he is mainly an Auditor for the Portuguese Institute for Quality (IPQ). Dr. Girao is a Senior Member of the IEEE, Chairman of the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) TC19—Environmental Measurements, and Vice-President of the Portuguese Metrology Society.

Raúl Martins

Short bio: Born in Lisbon, Portugal. He received the Electrotechnical Engineering, MsD, and Ph.D. degrees from the Instituto Superior Tecnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, in 1996, 1999, and 2004, respectively. Since 2004, he has been an Assistant Professor with the Technical University of Lisbon, and since 1997, a member of the instrumentation and measurement line, Instituto de Telecomunições, where he follows his interests in the instrumentation arena, particularly in biomedical instrumentation, biosensors, electromagnetic modeling, and image processing. He teaches courses in instrumentation, signal acquisition, electromagnetic modeling, sensors and biosensors, and electromagnetic compatibility. Dr. Martins is member of the Academic Affairs Unit, Portuguese Chapter, IEEE EMBS and the IMEKO Technical Committee 13 for Measurements in Biology and Medicine.
